WEST UNION (KWWL) -

The 20-13 baseball season will have a different feel on this diamond in West Union; it will be the first time in 6 years that Jake Greco won't be suiting up for the Hawks.

"We've had a lot of players through the years that have kind of been that keystone player, that cornerstone of the program," North Fayette Head Coach Dan Hovden said. "Jake's one of those guys."

Sometime in the next couple weeks, one of the greatest careers in Iowa high school history will come to an end. In 5 years, he amassed a total of 45 home runs. While his 281 hits ranks number one all time in the state of Iowa, it's an accomplishment his teammates attribute to his great focus.

"He keeps us up," North Fayette Senior Kevin Vierow stated. "When he screws up, he gets down on himself, but he bounces back. Keeps the team up. He's a good leader."

"He just works hard. Good things come to people that work hard," Hovden said.

His hard work didn't just produce results on the baseball diamond, Greco will leave as one of the school's top running backs as well after a career that saw him rush for just under 5 thousand yards, which included 75 trips to the endzone. In all, the bruising back holds 10 different North Fayette rushing and scoring records.

but his football cleats have been hung up for good as he's set to join the baseball team at Upper Iowa next season-- somewhere he's very familiar with.

"Back when I was younger, 5 or 6 through 10 I was a batboy for them," Greco said.

"He's got a lot of different ways that he can go in baseball," Hovden said. "A lot of different positions he can play, and he's very versatile. They'll find a good place for him down there."
