DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Iowa will see $3.5 Million from a national settlement between GlaxoSmithKline and the federal government.

In the settlement, the drug maker has agreed to pay a total of three billion dollars for health care fraud. The federal lawsuit claimed the company promoted unapproved uses for Wellbutrin and Paxil and failed to share safety information about Avandia. GlaxoSmithKline also agreed to plead guilty to criminal charges that it violated the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

"This settlement represents the largest healthcare fraud settlement in U.S. history," said Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals Director Rod Roberts in a statement.

The money will be used to compensate Iowa's Medicaid program for any harm resulting from the company's illegal conduct.
