UPDATE: Woman who drowned in western Iowa river identified

ATLANTIC (KWWL) -

Authorities in Cass County have identified the 31-year-old woman who drowned in the West Nishnabotna River near Cold Springs Park.

The Cass County Sheriff's office says the body of 31-year-old Nicole Roberts, of Lewis,  was found in the river just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Crews were called to the popular picnic area named "Rock Cut" just after 9:00 p.m. They say the woman was last seen alive just south of that area in the river.

Authorities say that area of the river is known for deep water and unpredictable currents. It's also more than three-quarters of a mile from the nearest access road, which makes it difficult for emergency personnel to reach the area.
