Four home runs get Kernels back in "Win" column

Four home runs helped the Kernels snap a six-game losing streak on Tuesday night in Beloit, Wisconsin with a 10-1 win over the Snappers.

Cedar Rapids took the early 2-0 lead in the second inning with back-to-back home runs by Zach Borenstein and Gary Mitchell.

After the Snappers cut the Kernels lead in half in the fourth inning, Cedar Rapids exploded for five runs in the fifth inning.  Eric Stamets, Alex Yarbrough and Frazier Hall loaded the bases with three straight singles.  Stamets was forced out at home, but then Mitchell hit a line shot that scored Yarbrough.  Hall scored as well thanks to a fielding error by Beloit's Nate Roberts.  Zach Wright finished things off with a three-run homer to give the Kernels the 7-1 lead.

Cedar Rapids capped off the scoring in the seventh inning when Abel Baker hit a three-run home run with Mitchell and Wright on base to make the score 10-1 Kernels.

Kernels starter Austin Wood allowed only one run on four hits while striking out three and walking two in six innings of work.

Stephen Tromblee pitched two innings in relief.  He allowed no hits while striking out four and walking one.

Ty Kelley pitched the 9th inning, allowing no runs and no hits while walking two and striking out one.

Tim Shibuya took the loss for Beloit.  He pitched two innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

The Kernels return home on Wednesday to begin a series with Wisconsin.  First pitch on July 4 is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.  The Kernels will wear special patriotic jerseys and fireworks will follow the game.
