State fire marshal considers reopening case in deadly fire

Posted:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The Iowa State Fire Marshal's office is considering reviewing the science that convicted a man in a 1997 arson.

Stephen Keyes is serving a life sentence for the arson of his Springville home. His wife, Sandra Keyes, and her two-year-old son Joshua died in the fire. Two other children escaped from the blaze.

Experts hired by Keyes say the fire investigation was flawed and used techniques that would not be allowed today.

The state fire marshal is consulting with the Iowa Attorney General's Office about the review. If granted, the review would be the first since 2011 when the fire marshal started a new policy to prevent wrongful arson convictions.
