7 Iowa boating fatalities signal cause for caution on waterways

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

As of July 3, Iowa has seen seven boating fatalities in 2012.  The state is on pace for its deadliest summer boating season in recent years.

It's the most fatalities since 9 were reported in 2007, and that figure was for the entire boating season.

Alcohol may be playing a role. Authorities say 22 people have been arrested for drunken boating in the state. In all of last year 54 were arrested.

Nationally, about two-thirds of all boating crashes are alcohol-related.
