CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Cedar Falls police say a Waterloo man has been charged in connection with a rash of church burglaries that took place over a year.

Captain Jeff Harrenstein says that 46-year-old James Jack Cowan was charged with 11 counts of third degree burglary and one count of second degree burglary.

Harrenstein says that churches in the Cedar Falls area began reporting the burglaries in February 2011 and they continued sporadically until February 2012.

Investigators say that Cowan would go into the churches while they were open to the public and pry open cabinets to steal cash.  They say Cowan admitted to the crimes.

Harrenstein says that Cowan was already being held in the Black Hawk County Jail after being charged with burglaries in Waterloo.
