12-tons of cardboard burns in Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids firefighters were called to International Paper on Monday after 12-tons of cardboard caught fire.

Crews were called to the plant at 4600 C Street SW just before 2:00 p.m. Monday after 12, one-ton compressed cardboard bales caught on fire in an outside storage area.

The cardboard is recycled and made into new boxes.

Employees assisted firefighters by using front-end loaders to break-up the bales.

Firefighters spent about two-hours on scene putting out the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
