Kernels drop fifth straight


Cedar Rapids dropped their fifth straight game with a 4-3 loss on Sunday in Beloit, Wis.

After going down 2-0 in the first, Cedar Rapids cut the lead in half in the second inning when Frazier Hall, who got on base after being hit by a pitch, scored on an Abel Baker ground out RBI to make it 2-1 Beloit.

The Kernels took the lead in the third inning. Eric Stamets scored on an Alex Yarbrough triple to tie the game at 2. Then, Andy Workman hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Yarbrough, to give Cedar Rapids the 3-2 lead.

The Snappers tied the game in the sixth and then finished things off in the eighth inning when Miguel Sano hit his Midwest League-leading 18th home run of the season to give the Snappers the 4-3 win.

Mike Johnson started for the Kernels, going four innings. He gave up two runs on one hit with three walks and six strikeouts.

Carmine Giardina took the loss, pitching four innings in relief for the Kernels. He allowed two runs on two hits while striking out three and walking one.

Tyler Jones got the win for the Snappers.

The Kernels and Snappers play game two of their three-game series on Monday at 7:00 p.m.

The Kernels return to Cedar Rapids on Wednesday. First pitch against Wisconsin is set for 5:05 p.m.
