Two years ago Gabby Douglas moved to Des Moines from Virginia to train with gymnastics coach Liang Chow. That move paid off Sunday as Douglas topped Jordan Wieber by 1-tenth of a point to win the US gymnastics Olympic trials.
Douglas began the night in second place but jumped into first following a solid performance on the vault. She followed that up with another good showing on the uneven bars, but a couple of stumbles on the balance beam tightened up the competition.
Douglas finished her night posting a 15.3 score on her floor exercise to clinch the competition.
The win guaranteed the 16 year old a spot on team USA, while the other 4 were chosen by selection committee.
Joining her on the Olympic squad are Wieber, McKayla Maroney, Alexandra Raisman, and Kyla Ross.
