OWI arrest after driver hits police vehicles

A 22-year-old man from Maquoketa faces drunken driving charges after police say he sideswiped two Iowa City police squad cars and also hit another police officer's bicycle.

He was arrested just before 2:00 a.m. early Sunday morning, July 1st.

According to a criminal complaint, Andrew Vincent Lange was traveling north on Linn Street with no headlights on.  The vehicle veered into a line of several stopped squad cars.  Another police officer jumped from his bike to avoid being hit.

After being pulled over, police had to physically remove Lange from his car.  Police say Lange had bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, and an odor of alcohol.  The complaint also says he thought he was in Afghanistan, and the police officers were Al Qaeda.

One officer injured his wrist in the struggle to remove Lange from his vehicle.
