Kernels wrap-up home stand with loss to Bees

The Cedar Rapids Kernels wrapped up their first home stand of the second half with a 10-7 loss to the Burlington Bees.

The Kernels took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Gary Mitchell and Zach Wright that plated Kevin Moesquit and Alex Yarbrough.

After the Bees tied the score in their half of the second, the Kernels took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second when Yarbrough hit a single that scored Trevor Hairgrove from second base.

Burlington took a 4-3 lead in the third on a two-run homer by Rashun Dixon.

The Bees upped their lead to 10-3, scoring three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

The Kernels came back in the bottom of the fifth with four runs of their own. First, Abel Baker hit a double that scored Gary Mitchell to make it 10-4.  Then, Hairgrove and Frazier Hall hit back to back home runs. Hairgrove's two-run shot and Hall's solo blast cut the Burlington lead to three runs.

But the bats would then fall silent for both teams and Burlington would get the 10-7 win.

Cam Bedrosian started for the Kernels.  He pitched two innings, allowing three runs on two hits while walking four.

Joe Melioris took the loss with one and two-thirds innings of work.  He allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out two and walking one.

Aaron Meade pitched two-and-a-third innings.  He gave up three runs on six hits while striking out one.

Logan Odom pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out two and walking one.

The Kernels got two wins but lost four in the first home stand of the second half in games against Beloit and Burlington.  Cedar Rapids went 1-2 in each series.

The Kernels are on the road for the next six games, starting Thursday night in Davenport.  The Kernels return home on July 4 at 5:05 p.m. vs. Wisconsin.
