Kernels rack up 12 hits on way to win over Bees


The Cedar Rapids Kernels racked up 12 hits on their way to an 8-1 win over the Burlington Bees on Tuesday night.

The Kernels got things started in the third inning when Chevy Clarke scored on a ground out by Alex Yarbrough to give the Kernels the 1-0 lead.

Cedar Rapids extended their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Zach Borenstein scored on an Abel Baker single.

Clarke made it 3-0 in the fifth with a lead-off home run to left field. Kevin Moesquit scored later in the inning on an Andy Workman single to make it 4-0 Kernels.

Gary Mitchell made it 7-0 in the seventh when he hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season, a three run shot which was also his second home run in two games.

The Kernels plated their final run in the eighth inning when Abel Baker scored on an Alex Yarbrough single.

The Bees added their only run in the ninth inning on a two-out single by Nick Rickles to make the 8-1 final.

Eswarlin Jimenez picked up his first win since coming back from a June 11 injury.  He gave up no runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one in five innings.

R.J. Alvarez allowed no hits while striking out three and walking one in two scoreless innings of work.

Stephen Tromblee pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Carmine Giardina pitched the ninth inning.  Giardina allowed the Bees only run.

The Kernels finish up the home stand and the series with the Bees on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
