Kernels notch first win of second half on Sunday


After starting the second half of the season off with two straight losses, the Kernels were finally able to notch a win against Beloit on Sunday in Cedar Rapids.

The Kernels lost the first two games of the second half by a combined score of 8-0, but bounced back on Sunday with a 9-1 win over the visiting Snappers.

After going down 1-0 in the top of the first, the Kernels came back and tied the game when Kevin Moesquit scored on a Gary Mitchell single.

Cedar Rapids extended their lead when Andy Workman homered to make it 2-1.

Zach Wright made it 3-1 Kernels in the fourth inning when he hit his first of two homeruns in the game.

The home team sealed the deal in the seventh inning.  With Eric Stamets and Workman on base, Mitchell hit a line drive single to score Stamets to make it 4-1 Kernels.  Then, with Workman and Mitchell on base, Wright came to bat and belted his second homer of the game to make it 7-1 Cedar Rapids.

The Kernels put the icing on the cake, scoring runs on a walk and a wildpitch to make it 9-1 Kernels.

Dan Reynolds started for Cedar Rapids, giving up one run on four hits in three innings of work.

Aaron Meade picked up the win.  He allowed no runs on one hit with one walk and one strikeout in three innings of work.

Stephen Tromblee and Ty Kelley finished things off.  Tromblee allowed no runs, no hits, no walks and struck out two in two innings.  Kelley gave up no runs no hits and walked one in one inning of work.

The Kernels begin a three-game series with the Burlington Bees on Monday at Perfect Game Field.  First pitch on Monday night is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
