CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Cedar Rapids fire crews were busy fighting a fire at an abandoned lumberyard in the southwest side of town early Sunday morning.

Crews were called out at 4:12 a.m. on 919 6th Street Southwest. Officials say portions of 6th Street southwest are closed off, and will remain closed off as crews work to clear away debris from the fire.

By 5:40 a.m. Sunday, officials declared that the fire was under control. Some residents living along 9th Avenue Southwest were evacuated at the time of the fire, but have since returned to their homes. Officials say some detached garages in the alleyway south of 9th Avenue were damaged in the fire.

There were also reports of a severed gas line, but the gas line has been fixed by crews.

6th St. SW was reopened to traffic around Noon.  Firefighters will continue to check on the site over the next few days to make sure the fire doesn't rekindle.
