Injured Iraq veteran Ian Ralston weds longtime girlfriend

Hometown hero Ian Ralston marked a milestone in his recovery, and in his life -- saying "I do."

The Waterloo Army veteran was paralyzed in 2010 while serving in Iraq. Saturday afternoon, he married his longtime girlfriend Nicole Sanders.

Family members and friends gathered at the Sunnyside Country Club to celebrate their union. Nicole's parents say their daughter, and their new son-in-law, aren't thinking about his injury anymore.

But getting through that difficult time has brought them closer together. The wedding was about celebrating their future, not to dwell on the past.

"It's just, from this day forward. And it's just celebrating. He really doesn't think about that anymore. And we don't either. It's just here and now," said Brenda Sanders.

"He's just strong. You can hear it in his voice. And their love is true," added Mark Sanders.

The newlyweds moved from Waterloo to Seattle earlier this year. That's where Ralston was stationed before deploying to Iraq. They live in the home with two fellow soldiers who help Ralston with his day-to-day needs.
