IC Regina's Lehman eyes state

Iowa City Regina's Jake Lehman is a really nice guy.

"If someone had a son, they'd want them to be like Jake Lehman," said senior teammate Nate Streb.

Regina coach Andy Gahan agreed.  "We asked the teammates if you were stranded in the middle of the night on the road and you had to call one kid to pick you up and fix a flat tire, every single one of them said Jake Lehman."

On top of that, Lehman's a pretty decent ballplayer as well.  He's leading the team with a .419 battling average, a week ago he hit a huge grand slam in a 2 run win over rival Iowa City West, while defensively the Regina senior is all about hustle.

"His first step, his instincts, to go get the baseball is second to none," said Gahan, "He's been embedded in our outfield for 4 years and he's gotten many opportunities out there. So, he's good at it."

With all his abilities, however, there's one thing he doesn't do.

"I don't like to talk too much," admitted Lehman.

"He's not the most vocal guy," said Streb, "but he leads by example.  He can make some big plays for us, and when he makes big plays it gets everybody fired up."

Big plays seem to find Jake Lehman.  The second leading tackler on the Regina football team had a huge recovery following a punt block which helped Iowa City Regina to a second straight state title.  Now they're focused on winning one on the diamond, something that's never happened for any of the 3 Iowa City High Schools.

Lehman knows it will take more than talk to get it done.

"Everybody's working hard, and doing there job," he said, "That's what it's all about.  Hopefully we get to state and do some damage."
