Iowa denied No Child Left Behind waiver

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Iowa was denied a waiver from the federal government's No Child Left Behind law.

Iowa applied for the waiver in February, along with 25 other states.

19 of those states did receive the waiver.

Governor Terry Branstad blames the failure on a statutory requirement passed by the legislature this year that requires statehouse approval of any changes to Iowa's teacher evaluation system.

In order to receive a waiver, states had to agree to enact several reforms, including instituting more rigorous performance evaluations for teachers and administrators.
