Wall collapses at historic Iowa hotel

BELLE PLAINE (KWWL) -

The wall of a historic hotel in Belle Plaine collapsed Thursday.  Now the owner is trying to figure out how to clean up the mess.

The exterior brick wall of the Herring Hotel fell around 7:00 a.m. The owner says he doesn't know what caused it to collapse.

The Herring Hotel was built in the early 1900s. City leaders say over the years it was host to several dignitaries. The current owner placed it on the National Historic Register with plans to restore it to its original condition.

The city administrator says the responsibility for cleanup is in the hands of the owner.
