Iowa City woman accused of stealing from cancer patient

An Iowa City woman faces charges for allegedly stealing from a cancer patient who later died.

According to police, 54-year-old Cynthia Shearon Garrido wrote $1,068.13 in checks belonging to a cancer patient who was incapacitated to pay for her court fines and cable bill.  They also say she wrote $2,700 in checks to herself.  They also say two checks were written to co-defendants.

Police say none of the checks had the victims signature or handwriting on them.  They say she admitted to a caretaker for the victim to taking the checks.

Garrido is also accused of taking the victim's flat screen television and selling it for $120 on the day he was hospitalized.

Police say the victim died four days after being admitted into the hospital.

Garrido is charged with fourth degree theft, second degree theft and forgery.

Police say the crimes happened in November 2011.  Garrido was charged in February.
