DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Boaters in Iowa and across the country can expect to see more law enforcement on the water this weekend during "Operation Dry Water".

The three-day operation, which includes increased law enforcement on the water, safety checks and boater contact, is meant to increase awareness of the dangers of drinking and boating.

In 2011, 50 officers contacted 799 boaters, performed 209 safety checks and issued 45 citations/warnings in Iowa.

"Operation Dry Water" runs from June 22-24.

So far, six people have died and 15 people injured in boating accidents on Iowa waterways according to the Iowa DNR.

There are about 229,000 registered boats in Iowa.
