Webb Simpson is the 2012 U.S. Open champion, closing with a 2-under 68 to win his first major title with a 1-over-par total.

Simpson was in the locker room watching TV when the outcome was decided. Past champions Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell, the third-round co-leaders, had a chance to catch him with birdies on the final hole that neither managed to produce.

Graeme McDowell ended up tied for second with Michael Thompson, one shot back of Simpson. Thompson made up ground with a final-round 67.

Furyk was in the hunt until a bogey on the final hole and finished two off the pace.

Halfway co-leader Tiger Woods had a long weekend. Woods bogeyed his first three holes and five of his first six during a round of 3-over 73. He finished seven over for the tournament, going 75-73 on the weekend. He tied for 21st.
