WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A Waterloo native who fought at Iwo Jima recently returned to the site of the WWII battle.

Visits to the island are restricted by the Japanese government.

Green, along with other dignitaries and some students, were able to go.

Saturday, Green and one of the students shared photos and stories from their trip to people at the Grout Museum in Waterloo.

The trip was made possible through the Greatest Generations Foundation, which pairs students with veterans on trips to historic battle sites.
