Solar powered boats take to the waters

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Teams from across the United States and the world brought their solar boats to be judged in seven different categories, including design, mechanics, and speed.

Each boat has up to three marine batteries, which are charged by solar panels.

The boats were raced in George Wyth State Park.

Building these boats teaches students about science, math and technology, and also about preserving the environment.

The UNI team, the Solar Panthers, took first place in Saturday's sprint races, which covered about three hundred yards. Their boat finished with a time of 25.03 seconds.

The final event, an endurance race, takes place Sunday afternoon.
