Black Hawk Co. Relay for Life raises $211,000

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Black Hawk County Relay For Life raised more than $211,000 over the weekend.

The annual all-night event is the largest fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and features a host of family-friendly activities all-night long.

Opening ceremonies got the event started at 6 pm Friday night, followed by the survivor and caregiver Victory Lap. The survivors' lap pays tribute to long battles fought and won over the dreaded disease.

Dozens of area businesses formed teams to take part in the Relay For Life. The team from GMAC wore t-shirts with brightly-colored ribbons. Each ribbon represented a kind of cancer battled by a member of the GMAC family at some point.

Names of cancer victims were read aloud during the traditional Luminary Ceremony, which memorializes those whom have lost their fight against cancer.  Well known Cedar Valley extreme fitness instructor, Russ O'Connell, joined Kelly Warren of the American Cancer Society in a "Fight Back Ceremony,' followed by fireworks.

Overnight events included movies, bowling and a cupcake-eating contest before closing ceremonies wrapped up the event at 7 a.m.
