CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says a candle is to blame for a fire that damaged an apartment on Friday morning.
After being called to the fire on Friday morning, crews that were 10 blocks away reported seeing a large column of black smoke coming from the Cedar Wood Hills Apartments at 2040 Glass Road NE, just west of I-380. When they arrived, smoke and flames were coming from apartment 201. On their arrival crews reported smoke and fire coming from apartment 201.
Firefighters began fighting the fire will searching the 30-unit building for anyone who was still inside. About 20 residents had been evacuated before firefighters arrived. Crews were able to get four more out of the building.
Tiffany Langton's apartment was severely damaged by the fire. Langton, 33, her child and four others were able to escape thanks to a working smoke alarm.
Some other residents of the building were checked out by paramedics, but none were taken to the hospital.
Fire officials say a candle left burning in the bathroom is to blame for starting the fire.
The American Red Cross is assisting those that can't return to their apartments.
