Kernels blank Bees to close out first half home schedule


The Cedar Rapids Kernels blanked the Burlington Bees 8-0 to close out the home schedule for the first half of the season.

Kernels pitchers put on quite a show for the 4,102 fans at Perfect Game Field, striking out 10 Burlington batters on the way to the win.

Alex Yarbrough got things started in the first with a lead-off triple.  He later scored on a Kaleb Cowart single to make it 1-0.  Cowart would later score on a Frazier Hall single and Burlington throwing error to give Cedar Rapids the early 2-0 lead.

The Kernels would extend their lead in the third inning.  Eric Stamets got things started with a lead-off single.  He would move to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a Cowart single to make it 3-0.  Cowart would later come home to make it 4-0.

Chevy Clarke made it 5-0 in the fourth after he was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a failed pick-off attempt and then scored on an Alex Yarbrough single.

Cowart got his third RBI in the seventh when he hit a solo shot over the left field wall to extend the Kernels lead to 6-0.  It was Cowart's ninth home run of the year.

The Kernels Zach Wright got his first professional home run in the eighth with a solo shot to left field to make it 7-0.  Cowart got his fourth RBI of the game when he hit a double scoring Yarbrough from second to make it 8-0.

Cam Bedrosian picked up the win, striking out seven batters in five innings.  He gave up two hits and two walks.

Aaron Meade, Logan Odom, and Ty Kelley finished the shutout.  Meade gave up two hits and walked one.  Odom struck out one and walked one.  Kelley got two strikeouts.

The Kernels finish out the first half of the season with three games at Kane County.  After a four-day break, they start the second half with a six-game home stand starting on June 22 against Beloit.
