New game and new field for Don Bosco football

GILBERTVILLE (KWWL) -

It may not be time for a football game, but the town of Gilbertville is thinking football.

"It gives me chills just thinking about it," said Nate Kremer, senior football player.

For Kremer this year will a change to what he is used to. He will now be playing eight-man football.

"I really don't know what to expect right now. I never seen it played or anything, but I'm just expecting a great season out of it," said Kremer.

But along with changes to the game, the location will change too.

"We had to take trailers and buses to our home games," said Tom Hogan, Athletic Director.

The Don Bosco Dons used to have to travel to Sloan-Wallace Stadium in Waterloo for their home games.

"We actually thought we could play on Sloan-Wallas field and they thought we could too, but I can understand their decision because eight-man football has a smaller field and they didn't want to paint new lines," said Hogan.

So the community has come together to build a new football field right next to the practice field.

"The field is growing. The grass is growing. We got an irrigation system in. We got a well in," said Hogan.

Everything for this field is being put together through donations, donations of time and money.

It's all in efforts to have a real home game by August 31st of this year.

"Building the field will bring the community together and kids will have a home stadium themselves," said Colby Yoder, head football coach.

The team hopes this field in town will bring more fans out to the stands by brining in people who didn't want to travel all the way to Waterloo.

The Don Bosco dons are doing everything as cost-effectively as possible. They are looking for volunteers and donations.
