Teen hiring off to a good start this summer

There is some good news for teenage job seekers. While the May jobs report showed increased numbers in unemployment for adults, it also showed a seasonally-adjusted increase of 67,000 teenagers with jobs.

While some teenagers are basking in the summer sun, others are working in it. Dillan Edwards is one of more than a dozen lifeguards at the Falls Aquatic Center in Cedar Falls. At 19-years-old, he's says there is no better summer job than being a lifeguard.

"It's an easy way to make a lot of money in a short amount of time and then it's a good way to pay for college. It really helps with that," said Edwards.

Shannon Moody works at the concession stand at The Falls. This is just one of her four jobs. She says if teenagers aren't working, they aren't trying.

"Some people don't like working, but it's fun once you get to know people and it pays off in the end when you get a pay check," said Moody.

The increase in teenage employment nationally may be due to older job seekers looking for higher paying and full-time employment. So they are not directly competing with teenagers.

"Right now it's really easy to get a job whether it's a fast food place, a restaurant, or even here at the pool. I've been a lifeguard for 4 years and each year I've had an easy time finding a job and so have my friends. They come here for the summer and they're looking for a summer job cause most are in college so they work all summer and it's really an easy way to find a job right here," said Edwards.

Even though there are more jobs for teenagers than there were last year, these numbers are still a lot lower than they were before 2008 when the recession started.
