Bees sting Kernels with two first pitch homers

The Burlington Bees used two first pitch, lead-off homers to beat the Kernels 2-1 in Cedar Rapids Tuesday night.

Burlington also got an outstanding performance from starting pitcher A.J. Cole who retired 14 straight hitters between the first and fifth innings after giving up a hit to the first Kernels batter of the game.

The Bees got on the board in the third inning when Bobby Crocker hit the first pitch he saw from Kernels starter Dan Reynolds over the left-center wall.

Down 1-0 in the sixth inning, the Kernels got on the board when Chevy Clarke, who doubled to lead-off the inning, scored on a Zach Borenstein single.

Rashun Dixon gave Burlington the lead for good in the seventh inning when he put the first pitch from Reynolds over the left field wall.

Reynolds took the loss, giving up two runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Joe Melioris and Aaron Meade each worked one inning.  They gave up no runs on no hits and each had a strikeout.  Meade gave up one walk.

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday night at Perfect Game Field.
