A community organization in Cedar Falls is taking steps to educate people about conserving water by selling rain barrels.
Green Iowa Americorps and nine businesses on Main Street Cedar Falls will be selling these painted rain barrels during a sidewalk sale on Saturday.
The barrels were painted by business owners and community members. This weekend people can bid on these barrels in a silent auction.
Organizers hope to use these barrels to educate the community about responsible water use.
"That's something very important to conserve the drinking water that we do have. So we thought it was a great idea to not only teach people about using rain barrels but also to make them beautiful and make them more interesting," said Jessica Pond with Green Iowa Americorps.
Bids start at $80. All the proceeds from the silent auction will go toward weatherizing homes for veterans, the disabled and the elderly in Black Hawk County.
