Kernels use 6-2 win to take series with Clinton

The Cedar Rapids Kernels used a 6-2 win on Monday afternoon to take the three-game series with the Clinton LumberKings.

The Kernels took the early 1-0 lead in the first when Ryan Jones snuck home while the Clinton players were preoccupied with a rundown with Kaleb Cowart.

Cedar Rapids plated two more runs in the second inning on a Wendell Soto two RBI single.  Andy Workman and Matt Scioscia scored to make it 3-0.

Scioscia made it 5-0 in the fourth when he hit a two-run shot to the porch in left field with Workman on base.

Clinton got a run in the top of the sixth inning, but the Kernels got it right back in the bottom half of the inning when Frazier Hall hit his eighth homer of the season over the right field signs, giving the Kernels the 6-1 lead.

The LumberKings added one more run in the eighth, but it wasn't enough.  Kernels take the game 6-2 and win the series two games to one.

The Kernels infield turned five double plays in the game and the Cedar Rapids pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts.

Eswarlin Jimenez started for the Kernels, pitching four innings.  He allowed four hits and struck out four.

Frank De Julio got the win with three and a third innings of work.  He allowed two runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Carmine Giardina pitched the final one and two-thirds innings.  He allowed no hits, no runs and no walks.  He struck out two.

The Kernels host the Burlington Bees for a three game series starting Tuesday at 6:35 p.m.

They finish off the first half of the season on the road in Kane County Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
