May tornado reports down nationwide

The month of May is usually the peak of tornado season throughout the nation. However, this May was a different story.

It could go down as the lowest tornado count since 1979. Across the nation, there were only 139 preliminary tornado reports, when the May average is typically 276 tornadoes.

In Iowa, 10 tornadoes were reported with the state average for the month of May usually around 12. May also did not have any tornado fatalities which hasn't happened since 2005.

So what does June hold for tornadic storms?

As of June 6, the Storm Prediction Center has reported 39 tornadoes with 29 of those reports on June 1st alone. Iowa usually averages 16 tornadoes in June, but the state has yet to witness its first June twister this year.

But it's still early, so tornadic storms are still possible. Remember to always keep a close eye on developing weather situations.
