More than 3,000 men and women in Iowa will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone. That's why the Cedar Valley Beyond Pink Team is joining national efforts, advocating for "Deadline 2020"--a goal to end breast cancer in just eight years.

One eastern Iowa woman who is working with the effort to ensure that deadline gets met.

Just more than one year ago, Lori Seawel's life changed forever.

"I was diagnosed with breast cancer on April 1st last year, and was here at work, and took the call here when I found out.  And so I shut the door and I cried," Seawel said.

After multiple surgeries, Seawel is now cancer-free and in good health.  But after her breast cancer battle, she set out on a war path to be an advocate for ending the disease.

"It's important because I don't want anybody else to have to go through it," said Seawel.

She's further inspired to fight the disease head on--since her mom is a 22-year breast cancer survivor.  And Seawel never wants her daughter or other loved ones to face this disease.

That's why she's joined the Cedar Valley Beyond Pink team to push "Deadline 2020"--with the goal to meet major milestones that could end breast cancer in just 8 years.

"One of those goals would be to prevent breast cancer from ever occurring in the first place.  The second goal is to prevent metastasis, which is the spread of breast cancer to other parts of the body, because those are things that will lower the mortality rate," Seawel said.

While it might seem like an impossible goal, Seawel says it can be achieved.   She and three fellow eastern Iowans just returned from Washington, D.C., meeting with lawmakers to lobby for the "Accelerating an End to Breast Cancer Act".

Those efforts are coupled with a petition drive to gather some 290,000 signatures that will be presented to the president next year, all efforts aimed to secure funding and support in the fight.

"Goals lock you in.  It gets people to get on board and make a commitment," said Seawel.

With that support, Seawel is confident significant strides can be made soon to stop breast cancer in its tracks.

You can help join the efforts to meet "Deadline 2020".

The Beyond Pink Team will be collecting signatures for its petition at the Guerilla Brewing Company, 2401 Falls Avenue in Waterloo, on June 28 from 5-10 p.m.

Special auction items and t-shirts will also be available for purchase to benefit Beyond Pink.  Guerilla Brewing will donate proceeds from a speciality beer available that evening, named for a breast cancer survivor, to Beyond Pink as well.

You can sign the online petition for Breast Cancer: Deadline 2020 here.
