Chiefs shut out Kernels in Peoria


The Cedar Rapids Kernels could only muster six hits as they were shut out by the Chiefs 4-0 in Peoria Wednesday night.

Down 1-0 in the sixth, the Kernels loaded the bases with two outs on singles by Ryan Jones and Kaleb Cowart and a walk by Andy Workman.  The rally ended when Trevor Hairgrove grounded out.

Down 4-0, the Kernels had runners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings, but the opportunities were thwarted by two strikeouts in the eighth and a double play in the ninth. 
Eswarlin Jimenez took the loss for the Kernels.  He pitched six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out five and walked three.  

Mike Johnson and Carmine Giardina both pitched scoreless innings in relief for Cedar Rapids.
Cedar Rapids and Peoria take the field on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. for game two of their three-game series in Peoria.

The Kernels return to Cedar Rapids on Saturday to start a series with Clinton at 6:35 p.m.
