Kernels get slow start, fall to LumberKings


The Kernels got off to a slow start Monday night and eventually fell to the Clinton LumberKings 9-3.

After going down 5-0, the Kernels finally got on the board in the fourth inning when Ryan Jones hit a long solo home run to right field.

Clinton extended their lead to 8-1, scoring two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

The Kernels cut the lead to 8-3 in the sixth inning.  After a single by Kevin Moesquit and a double by Jones, Kaleb Cowart hit a sacrifice fly bringing Moesquit home.  Jones then scored on a single by Frazier Hall.

Clinton added their final run in the eighth inning to make the final 9-3.

Starter Austin Wood took the loss for the Kernels. He pitched four innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits. He struck out four and walked five.

Joe Melioris pitched two innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits while striking out two and walking one.

Aaron Meade pitched one scoreless inning, allowing one hit.

Stephen Tromblee finished things off for Cedar Rapids, allowing one run on three hits in one inning of work. He struck out one and walked one.

The Kernels are off Tuesday and travel to Peoria for a three-game series that starts Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
