Smoky plan may put out Iowa City landfill fire

Posted:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

A new plan to manage the fire at the Iowa City landfill may produce more smoke over the next week. The fire broke out on May 26th when some hot trash came into contact with the shredded tire lining of the landfill.

Now crews will start what they call a "stir, burn, and cover" process to put the fire out. They'll use large machinery to stir the piles of burning tires, to allow the fire to quickly burn the fuel. Then a layer of clay will be put on top of the smoldering tires to smother the flames.

The city says people with respiratory, heart or other conditions should try to limit exposure to the smoke.
