Kernels use 9th inning rally to down LumberKings

Just a day after losing on a LumberKing walk-off home run in the ninth, the Kernels put together a ninth inning rally to down Clinton on Sunday.

Cedar Rapids took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Able Baker grounded out, allowing Trevor Hairgrove to score from third base.

The Kernels lead doubled in the third inning when Ryan Jones hit his third home run of the season to make it 2-0.

Kernels pitchers gave up two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, giving Clinton the 4-2 lead.

That lead lasted until the Kernels came to bat in the ninth.  Kaleb Cowart and Frazier hall both singled to start the inning.  Hairgrove came to bat and bunted to move both runners into scoring position, but third baseman Ramon Morla threw the ball into the outfield, allowing Cowart to score.

Baker was the next batter, his groundball was fielded and thrown home, but Hall was able to slide under the tag to tie the game at 4-4.

The Kernels scored the final run on a Chevy Clarke sacrifice fly that allowed Hairgrove to score easily and give the Kernels the 5-4 win.

Kernels' starter Cam Bedrosian took the no decision, pitching five and a third innings.  He gave up four runs on seven hits.  He struck out one.

Frank De Jiulio got the win and Ty Kelley got the save.

The Kernels wrap-up the three game series at Clinton on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m., before a day off and then a trip to Peoria for a three-game series.
