Waterloo church holds final service before moving

It's the end of an era for one of Waterloo's oldest churches.
Immanuel Lutheran held its final Sunday service at its building on Franklin St.
Earlier this year, the church sold the building - which also housed a school - to a group that will soon build a pharmacy on that site.
Immanuel Lutheran began holding services in Waterloo in 1878 and has moved several times.
For congregation members, it was something of a bittersweet day but this move is one they say needed to be done.
"The hardest part for us is just keeping up with repair. We had our school we're merging with Valley Lutheran.  The cost of bringing the school and church up to where we needed to modernize made it prohibitive and it made us decide whether we wanted to stay here or find a new location," said Rev. Gerald Kapanka.
Immanuel Lutheran plans to move to a brand new building in Cedar Falls.
In the meantime, services will be held at Christ Lutheran Church in Waterloo.
