Open house held for student-built Cedar Rapids home

Some eastern Iowa high school students can now call themselves home builders.

15 students from 3 Cedar Rapids area schools built a home.

With the help of tradesmen and teachers, the students had the chance to learn building trades.

Sunday, they had an open house to show off the 3-bedroom home on Windy Meadow Circle NE.

The program was originally started in 1973 as an opportunity to give students a different kind of learning experience

"This gives them an opportunity to make a career choice based on practical experience. The average high school student now days experiences working at McDonalds or something like that," said former instructor Dave Rosenberg.

Money made from the sale of the home goes back into the project, buying new tools and helping to pay for next year's home-building project.
