Columbus, Wahlert and I.C. West advance to soccer finals

A spot in their first ever final was on the line for the Columbus Sailors, and they produced knocking off 3-time defending champ Iowa City Regina 3-2 in a shootout.

They got right after it as Pat McLaughlin scored just a minute into the game.  However Regina would quickly counter.  Aaron Schmitz scored on a free kick to  tie it up at the halftime break.

The Regals would go up 2-1 on Ben Spanick's second half goal, but a late defensive breakdown allowed the Sailor's Par Maw to tally the equalizer leading to an eventual shootout.

That's where Jon Maas came up huge for Columbus, Maas picked up 2 huge saves.  That would allow Alfredo Real to score the winner.  The Sailors went 4-4 in the shootout, while Regina made just 2.


Class 2A's top seeded team Dubuque Wahlert got on ADM early through a pair of penalty kicks.   Sam Koenig's second sent the Golden Eagles to the halftime break up 2, nothing.

Alex Perry shut the door in the second scoring off the corner as Wahlert advanced with a 3-0 win.  They'll meet Norwalk in Saturday's final.


Class 3A's top seed Iowa City West had numerous chances, but found scoring a bit tough against the Ames Cyclones.  The two teams would go to the halftime break tied at zero.

Tim Fleagle finally ended the drought giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead.  They would add another goal late to advance 2-0.  They'll meet Johnston in the class 3A final.
