Posted:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Iowa City's mayor has signed a local disaster declaration, as the landfill fire continues.
The declaration opens up access to seek state and federal help.

Shifting winds are expected to direct its smoke plume toward populated areas of Iowa City.

The smoke can be seen as far south as Washington.

The city says people in the path of the smoke should try to avoid exposure to smoke, especially if you have respiratory, heart or other conditions aggravated by smoke.
