My Waterloo Days gets off to a soggy start

It's a slow start to "My Waterloo Days." Rain and cool weather is keeping many people from experiencing the sights and sounds of the annual festival in downtown Waterloo.

James Cockhren has been bringing his tasty barbeque to the masses for the past six years. He says nothing spoils a party like cold temps and rain.

"The crowds been slow because of the rain and what not, but we need the rain for the farmers also and I need it for my beef because I sell a lot of beef brisket and hopefully this will kind of clear out and we'll have a better evening," said Cockhren.

Other vendors were hoping for a nicer day to kick off the celebration, but the hardcore fans of their treats are still making their way to Lincoln Park.

"This is not the weather anyone wants when having a festival so the city I'm sure is not very pleased either," said vendor Reatha Aronson.

"When the weather is bad like this they don't want to be out in the first place then they don't want to spend the money to be out in bad weather," said Carissa Bovee, who works at her family's mini-donut stand.

Around 40 vendors will be taking part in "My Waterloo Days" and each one is hoping to make a profit from this celebration.

"The perfect weather is about 80 degrees out and like the first Friday'loo we did down here three weeks ago, that was really nice. We had a big crowd turnout and it really turned out really nice," said Cockhren.

"My Waterloo Days" continues through Sunday. The parade will take place downtown Friday night. A laser light show and fireworks display will be held at the airport Saturday.
