Kernels losing streak continues with loss to Wisconsin

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Wisconsin scored five runs in the first inning on their way to a 10-2 win over the Kernels on Wednesday night.

The Timber Rattlers used a walk, four straight singles, another walk and a two-run double to rack up the early 5-0 lead on Cedar Rapids in the top of the first inning.

Kernels starter Austin Wood pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing five runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.

The Kernels scored one run in the second inning when Matt Scioscia scored on a Wendell Soto single to right field to make it 5-1.

Wisconsin added one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh to make it a 9-1 Timber Rattler lead.

The Kernels made it 9-2 when Kaleb Cowart scored on an Abel Baker single to center field.

Wisconsin made it 10-2 in the ninth when Greg Hopkins hit a solo home run.

Frank De Jiulio pitched four and one-third innings in relief.  He allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Carmine Giardina pitched three innings for Cedar Rapids.  He allowed one unearned run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Ty Kelley pitched the final inning for Cedar Rapids.  He allowed one run on one hit, with one strikeout and one walk.

Cedar Rapids has lost four straight while the Timber Rattlers have won 11 of their last 14 games.

The two teams take the field again on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

    The Cedar Rapids Kernels registered eight doubles and scored the first eight runs of Monday’s 10-4 triumph over the Lake County Captains in the rubber game of a three-game series at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

    Steven Ihm came close to his first career professional win on Sunday. Ihm carded a 65 on the final round of the Utah Championship finishing at 23 under par. That put him one stroke behind the Web.com tournament champion Cameron Champ.
