Eastern Iowans give input on 2012 Farm Bill

A huge piece of legislation that will have a major impact on eastern Iowa will soon be debated on the floor of the U.S. Senate.

The 2012 Farm Bill will appropriate billions of dollars between nutrition assistance, conservation efforts, farm and commodity programs, and many others.

Congressman Bruce Braley is holding listening sessions around Iowa's 1st District. He is looking for input from those who will be directly impacted by the bill.

Phil Specht is a long time dairy farmer in Clayton County and attended the meeting. Over the past couple years the dairy industry has seen it's fair share of up's and down's. Specht wants to know what the 2012 Farm Bill will do for his business.

"I don't expect much out of it. I don't think they'll be able to come up with a dairy part that is any more than just general trend to minimize risk through subsidizing the insurance industry," said Specht.

An Ag subcommittee in the Senate just passed this bill. It could move to the Senate floor for debate in a few days.
