CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -
School is nearing an end for many students in eastern Iowa. And for Price Lab School in Cedar Falls, it's a final goodbye, as their school will close for good this summer. But students and teachers say the spirit of Price Lab will live on
For the hundreds of students and faculty of Price Lab School in Cedar Falls, it's not just the end of another school year. It's the end of an era, as the school will be closing its doors forever.
"It's unfortunate that our community's closing something so wonderful as this school," said Price Lab parent Stacy Glascock.
Glascock's two daughters are finishing first and fifth grades at Price Lab this year. They're still hanging onto a thread of hope that just maybe this won't be the end, since a lawsuit trying to halt the closure is still pending. Still, most students are already making plans to attend school elsewhere next year.
"I'm pretty excited about going to Janesville," said student Alex Glascock.
Making the transition a bit easier--several of her friends will be going to Janesville next year, too. But she knows things won't be the same outside Price Lab's unique teaching and learning environment.
"One of the best things about this school is that it gives a lot of chances for kids to participate in extra-curricular activities, and the classes are really good. The teachers are really nice," Alex Glascock said.
Long-time teachers say Price Lab's learning model has been the heart and soul of the school. But fourth grade teacher Amy Lockhart Is confident student-teachers will still be able to get great hands-on training at other area schools.
"Field experience is obviously going to have to change a little bit just because of the proximity to campus. But I think with our knowledge and ability to help classroom teachers--not help them teach, but help them to do the things we did with the university students, we can work along with them," said Lockhart.
Price Lab staff are charging students with a big task heading into next year: take the knowledge and leadership skills you've developed here, wherever you go, to keep the spirit of this school alive.
Wednesday is the last official day of school at Price Lab. The building will shut down permanently as of July 1.
