Bucks set for opener under new management

The Waterloo Bucks open the season Wednesday with a new face at the helm.  Travis Kiewiet begins his first year at manager following the departure of Jason Nell in the off season.

Kiewiet, a Dike native, spent 4 seasons as a Bucks assistant prior to being promoted.

His top goal coming into this season is to turn his team into a winner.  That's been tough recently as the Bucks haven't posted a winning record since 2004.  Kiewiet believes chemistry is key to ending that skid.

"It's hard to get there, and I already told my assistant coaches, my number one goal is team chemistry," Kiewiet said, "I'm working on trying to get these guys to play together as a team.  The sooner you can do that, the more success you have."

A winning record is just step one.  The Bucks haven't brought a championship back to Waterloo in exactly a decade, and their new manager hopes he has the team to get it done again.

"The Cedar Valley loves champions," he added, "Just look at the Waterloo Black Hawks, they made it all the way to the finals, and people went crazy.  It's the same way in baseball.  A .500 record would be a great starter, and anything on top of that would be good."

Waterloo's opener against the Rochester Honkers is set for 6:30 PM Wednesday night at Riverfront Stadium.
