New, female statue added to Gilbertville Veterans Memorial

The Gilbertville Veterans Memorial opened in 2009. During the last several years, the town has added to the park.

The newest addition is a female statue commissioned specifically by the town of Gilbertville. It's unique for a couple of reasons.

"The face on the statue is the face of one of our local female veterans," said Linda Freet.

The woman represented served in Iraq as part of the Army Reserves.

"She was our first female American Legion commander here in Gilbertville and her grandfather was the first commander," said Freet.

The woman the statue is modeled after asked her name not be used because she wants the statue to represent all women who've served, not just her.

Clifford Wollman drove the statue in from Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

He said this is the first concrete, life-sized female statue he knows about.

So Gilbertville may be the statue's first location, but not its last.

"When they make more of the statues, her face is going to be all over the country," said Freet.

Linda Freet with the Veterans Park Committee said it's great to have every branch of the military represented and acknowledge the service of both men and women.

"We're building history, and we're proud," she said.
