Sailors, Vikings capture state golf crowns

The Decorah Vikings and Columbus Sailors each captured state golf team titles Saturday afternoon.

For Columbus, the win ended a bit of a drought.  The Sailors, a program with a great history, have now won 5 titles since 1999, however this marked the first since 2004.  Senior Mitch Maiers finished as the state runner up after falling to South O'Brien's Shaan Desai in a playoff.

Decorah had waited even longer for the title.  The Vikings only previous championship came 44 years ago in 1968.  Senior Nick Nelson captured runner-up honors on the individual side.

Algona's Bishop Garrigan high school won the class 1A title, while Don Bosco senior Carson Barron won his first individual state title beating Valley of Elgin's Levi Fink by one stroke.
