Columbus boys drop Gilbert for return trip to state

Spurred by a strong second half effort, the 3rd ranked Columbus Sailors rolled over Gilbert to advance to the 1A Boys State Soccer tournament for the second straight season.

Columbus found offense hard to come by in the first half.  Despite spending most of the half on the Sailors' offensive end, Gilbert's James Beste opened the scoring with a header near the end of the half.

Columbus responded within seconds.  Ben Jasper headed in a Collin Beyer corner kick in the final minutes to tie the game at 1 going to the halftime break.

The Sailors owned the second half.  Early in the frame, Chris Sink gave them their first lead drilling home a corner kick.  Par Maw proceeded to beat the Gilbert keeper from outside the box for the 3-1 lead, then later added a second goal on a breakaway to complete the final margin.  That goal, his 27th this year, set a new Columbus single season record.

The Sailors picked up the #1 seed in the state tournament and will open with #8 seed MOC Floyd Valley on Thursday.
